1) What are you most looking forward to next semester?
What I am looking forward to for next semester: my courses. I am retaking Human Anatomy (didn’t do as well as I wanted to do) and I am looking forward to see if Dr. Froiland sticks to his syllabus. Hopefully I will do a lot better, since I have most of his lectures recorded and I will be keeping my notes. Bonus: taking the lab with a different TA-get to see a different teaching method. I will be taking Intro Physical Anthropology and Archaeology, plus Intro Sociology. I am hopping to be able to do both classes and not have to drop one. They both sounded very interesting. Currently I am at 20 credits for the winter but I think I will be dropping down to 16. The class I will be dropping is offered during the summer and since there are at least two other classes that I will be taking at that time I figured it should give me enough credits to be full time student in summer. woohoo
2) What advice do you have for incoming freshman next fall?
Advice to new freshman
1-record you lectures, get a recorder that allows you to connect to your laptop. BY recording the lectures it allows you to go back and edit your notes. Listen to the recording on you way to class or any down time you may have.
2-use the resources on campus. It doesn’t hurt to go ask for help. Think of it this way: no fee and cost only your time. Make use of your tuition. There is the writing center, tutor groups or one on one tutoring. The writing center helped me with a few of my EN papers.
3-do not be afraid to speak with you professor. It is amazing how different they are when they are in their office. If you don’t understand something let them know and they may be able to explain it better. It also shows that you are trying to pass their course. Make sure that what you say does sound like you were trying to fallow along in class.
4-Make us of you time. If you have a lab or a class that is hours long and gets done early. Stay: work on your assignment for that class, speak with the teacher, talk with other classmates about the assignment (might be able to form a study group). If you can’t stay in the room cause the teacher is leaving and locks up. Try to find an area near by to set at and work on the assignment while it’s still fresh in your mind.
5-DO NOT OVER DO IT! Taking a lot of courses or even a lot of credits can put a strain yourself. If you can try to get at least an hour break in between every two hours. It helps you to recollect your thoughts for your next course and review assignments.

1) What are you most stressed-out with at the moment? Why? Is your body re-acting to this stress? Devise a plan to deal with it. (Who do you turn to when you are stressed?)
~Right now at this moment in life, I am stressed-out about my mother’s surgery. I am sitting in the waiting room with my father. There is an hour left before we find out how her surgery went. It’s my mother I care for her that is why I am stressed. My body is tired, stomach upset and I have a headache. Plus my feet hurt, this place is huge. Where’s my GPS handset when I need it. There is a college hospital and special hospital clinics in this big area. I think there are at least 5 buildings. I have walked more here than I do at NMU. Everything here is not marked well nor is there many help director listings. Sit and wait in comfortable chair and take some Ibuprofen. Once I get back to hotel I plan on going to the hotel’s pool and swim (hopefully) a mile. I did that a lot in winter/spring until my local gym closed. It is a good workout and it makes me feel tired (a good tired) and relaxed. I am sure this question was about school; stressed on getting my classes for winter, I have to wait to Saturday (as long as my advisor lifts the hold) I am trying to stick to a time line and not getting the classes does not help. I have been stressed most of my life. I was a CSA for 4 yrs, major stress. So my body is taken this stress fine. If my hold is not lifted by Thursday I will be having a nice chat with my advisor’s boss. This is may main stress with school right now.

~“What do I have in common with the classmate whose Blog I chose. Did she offer any useful information you will most likely use in the future.”
I commented on Megan’s number 2 blog. I think she had her head on straight. What I got from her blogs was a very positive feeling. I think that is something we have in common, trying to have a positive outcome. We also know that we are not alone in this college experience. I am not sure there was any useful information. I know that she has left her mark in my mind; I will remember that someone else is out there experience the same thing or close to the same thing I am. Be prepared for anything and remember to take a step back or take a deep breath.

What do you feel this course (UN100) should focus on? What do you need help in, specifically? It is hard to say what this class should and should not focus on. I feel that the meaning of this class is not clear. When I first heard about the UN class I was told that it would help me with the classes that were in my block. Then when I actually signed up for it I was told that is was a class all by itself designed to help freshman get through their first semester. Yes there is a lot of reading in this class and few assignments. The assignments are mainly easy but they take up time that I do not have to spear. I do not like reading the Fast Food Nation; I find it to be boring. I honestly do not know how many more times I can hear about how fast food is really bad for you. I worked at a fast food place I know already. I will give it a little credit I did find out maybe a few lines worth interest, out of the 5 chapters I have read, but that is all the positive remark I can give this book. Been there, should have done that; that is targeted to freshman out of high school. More than half the suggestions I already know. I am sure that this class like the other UN classes has to fallow an agenda since they are part of some program. I would like it if this classed focused on classes that were included with its block. It would make since, being that I was told if I dropped the UN class the rest of my classes that were signed with the block would be dropped. Now how the H*** is that far! Sorry to those whom had the wool pulled over their eyes about this class being a study hall. It is nice to come to a class that has a laid back atmosphere, but then again it is not, when I have a lot of reading & review to do for Chemistry & Anatomy. Those are the classes I need help in, plus the lab for Anatomy. I need to pass these classes. I will say I am looking forward to some up coming dates on this class. If this came out very negative, I did not mean for it to have.
On a side note; I was not happy that I had to create a blog for this class and it was being counted towards my grade. Am I going to get a book or movie deal when I am done with this? Why are we so dependent on technology and sites like these? I am sure that someone can point of what good it is. However for every good point made usually there are two bad points that trump the good. This side note has to come to an end before it becomes another topic on its own.

Ø Describe your ideal Instructor/Professor.
~Ideal professor for me; is approachable, speaks clearly and loud, does not talk to the board, gives worksheets & provides the answers, does not assume that you know everything because it was said once to you. Lab instructors should review what was given in a lecture: do not ask “did he go over this? Okay-good”. Gives detail explanation to what they are looking for in an answer. They should do a review day the day before the test. Just because you do a 2 min review at the beginning of each lecture doesn’t mean we got it- if you don’t like to then don’t get mad if I ask you if it’s okay to review the notes I have with you- once again approachable. If they us power point students should be able to excess it via the course webpage (or anything that is meant for student/instructor communication). Throw a curve ball, pop quizzes are bummer but it helps to tell were I’m falling behind. Keep in mind I am one of thousands whom make your paycheck possible. Don’t look down on me because I am female student.
Ø “I knew it when I studied it, but I forgot it on the test.” How can students study differently to prevent this from happening?
~I have no idea; I am one of those students. Change the way you study. One thing I try to do is a breathing exercise to calm myself down. By being calm the answer may come. Take beep breath through your noise into your belly. Hold for 5 seconds then breath out slowly through you mouth. Repeat about 10 times. I actually do this a lot other reasons, helps me sleep, if I am upset, or just not in a calm state. Thank you Mrs. Boyle!
Ø How do you study for quizzes/tests?
~I read my notes, do my flash cards, if any of the chapters have practice questions I do those and I skim the chapters that will be part of the exam. New thing I am doing is listening to my recording of lectures. Also getting together with someone else or a study group does help.
Ø What do you have trouble with on quizzes/tests?
~The trouble I have with quizzes/test is the pressure of getting the right answer. A lot of the time the way a question is worded does not make sense to me and I need it stated a different way for me to understand. I do have a learning disability, so through out high school it took me longer to get a test done than some other students.
Health fast food: I agree to the subway veggie sub. Hardees’ side salads are okay, I know(exemployee of 8 yrs) the produce is fresh and cut right there. However I would not recommend it during winter. A lot of the produce comes from other countries-poor quality. Now the salad dressing is a different store. An alternative to fries is baked sweet potatoes fries. They are so good and lot healthier for you. Baked is better tan going fried. Eating them plan is fine. Coco’s has them-not much of a fast food. they are soo good I had to post it. Waddell’s in Jefferson WI does a style of the slider burgers. This meat is fresh daily and the patties are made per order. Grilled right then as well. The grease on the grill is not good. This is a shack size kitchen and everything is cooked on the small grill. I feel this is better that any frozen (sometimes pre cooked) patty that you will get at a fast food chain restaurant.

Ø List your own quote, favorite saying, song, or other expression of your feelings today.
~comme ce comme ca
finished my en111 essay but still have ch105 & bi201 to do.
Ø List initial observations of your new environment.
~Lots of stairs, thank goodness my classes are with in close distance of each other. Mondays: Parking lot 17 is full by 8:20 am, have no choice but take the stairs locatde in lot 36. The lawns are watered on rainy days, what a waste of water.
Ø List initial observations of your classes.
~Hmm there is at least 2 or more older adults than me. Not including the instructor. Not that big attendence in most classes. Get to class early to get at least in the first three rows in middle on lectures.
Ø What observations have you made about other students?
~I have noticed a lot of the students in my classes are fresh out of high school, there are few that have years ahead of the rest. At least its more than what I thought is was going to see. Some of the boopers have little attention span. Not good study partners.
Ø About your instructors?
~You can tell which ones have done this before and which ones have not. They claim you can come talk to them but I wonder will they understand me?
Ø What do you think will be your biggest challenge(s) academically this semester?
~Relearning the math needed for the ch 105 class. Learning anything with anatomy & keeping up.
Ø Reiterate a term or concept you learned in Anatomy this week.
~Connective tissue & Epithelia tissue are like oppisote relationship. Connective has lots matrix few cells were Epithelia has lots cells and few matrix.
Ø List a few pleasant events that happened during your first weeks at NMU.
~I meet some actual adults whom are going for the same thing as I am. I haven even set up study time with one of them whom is in four of same classes.
Ø List habits you already possess that make you successful in college.
~I don’t have the need to go party nor need to depend on myspace/facebook interact with others. I know what I want to get from NMU.
Ø List habits (timewasters?) you can change or modify, or need to lose.
~The amount of time I spend doing other things rather than studing or doing my assignments.
Ø Explain how you determine what to write down in notes during lectures.
~I plan to read the section a day or two before the lecture, if there is something stated during the lecture that was not in the reading then that will be noted. Also if there is something “strongly” stated that was in the section then that also will be noted. Ie: if I don’t know it then its being put into notes
Ø Based on your first readings in the TCB text, describe the differences between Active Learning & Passive Learning (reading, note-taking, etc..)
~Active is to be involved in the learing process, ask questions, communicate with the instructor and other classmates. Passive is to us being there taking in what the instructor is saying and taking notes-alone.
Ø Based on your first readings in the BT text, list TWO of favorite quotes and explain why they "speak" to you.
~“College was the best time…I never missed a party AND I got great grades! The trick is to get up each morning and plan exactly what you want to do that night-party or whatever. Then tell yourself you can’t go until you’re done studying. It’s like a reward. If I thought nothing was going on I’d waste the whole day and end up falling asleep in front of the TV at night” graduate, English, Ohio University pg 104” I relate by always reminding myself when I have to study or go to class what this is all for. Even if it gets harder every time that by the end of this jourany the reward will be a career & other fullfilments in my life.
“it was incredible how easier Chemistary was when I began reading the assignments before the lecture. It waslike a different course.” Sophomore, Engineering, University of Michigan” I have to do the same as well. However I do it since science is not my strong subject and also it if very hard to understand my instructor. I even do it for my Anotomy class. I found its better to read last lecture and the new lecture and part of the next lecture and keep on that track then it hopefully will be stuck in the head for final/quiz time.
Ø Finally, name one goal (personal, academic, etc..) you have for yourself next week.
~Not to fall asleep during one of my assigned readings for EN 111. Those essays are so borring.
